stephanie will long be remembered by me for an incident about two/three years ago where she acted as bait to lear me toward a catch. i didn’t nibble and as of yet have not caught the prize. she is no longer bait & has nobly left her job at the factory to focus on her priorities of family & music. i’m listening to the two samples left on her kickstarter update #7, they are beautiful, ethereal, touching, haunting & comforting and place in me a longing to hear more. the factory where stephanie worked is a family that nurtures their workers, it’s wonderful to hear some reflections on an ideal where everyone at the office is part of the 99% & living in a world the 1% may never know.

There is a Tom Warren show in Williamsburg through Feb 4 2 pm. a grid of 32 8x10’s the result of Tom Warren Portrait Studio Iona Nov 13 2011. camera was a hasselblad 500c 6x6 w 120 mm zeiss lens, studio strobe main light, daylight fill, film kodak portra vc 160. sequence runs from bottom right to upper left. historic b+w portraits fill out the exhibit. a must see!

nyc is about communities, the LES in 1981 meant as much to me as williamsburg, brooklyn does today. it’s all about finding/making friends you can work with.
Colab @ Printed Matter in Chelsea, this posting long over due. I’m in the show and it’s a wonderful overview of a terrific group of artists from a glorious period in NYC’s history. I conceptualized my first Portrait Studio @ ABC No Rio in 1981 to integrate our artist’s community with the indigenous residents of The Lower Eastside where we had set up camp in a store given us by the city in the heels of The Real Estate Show. TRES was a revelation for me, after wanting to be an artist my entire life when I saw this show I thought this is art & I can do this. I never went to art school(I was taught I couldn’t draw), the school I choose to attend, Kent State did not have my passion in The School of Art, it was in Journalism, I have a BS in Commercial Photography. Anyway I made friends that night that I went a way with. Walter Robinson compared my portraits to August Sander’s, I didn’t know of Sander but was flattered. I Had been introduced to Michael Disfarmer in high school and taken a portrait seminar with Henry Beck in college and took it from there. Yo Bronx! Fashion Moda South Bronx Portrait Studio. the second stop of my itinerant endeavor was of the longest duration, i kept going back for more from late 1982 through early ‘85 taking 500 ish portraits in this fine setting. founded by stefan eins the moda was a place of magic.

1981 herald square station 32nd st entrance shoeshine installation. first discovered these in ‘79 and marveled. was often at herald square upon moving to new york cause that’s where the camera stores were. olden camera, two camera barns, willoughby, pro foto, an hassidic shop & others. the artist performed here shinning shoes on an irregular schedule and the installation was removed later in the early 1980’s. this was the best art i’ve ever seen in a subway station, don’t care for the commissioned work spread around today. never understood why graffiti has not been commissioned, the days of painted, tagged, written trains cars was awesome.

beginning apr 12 2001 i set up my leica m-4 w 90mm lens to document the view from my woodside queens ny apartment of the manhattan skyline. within two months i switched to a nikon f w 105 mm lens and shot daily logging the date time exposure & conditions through apr 24 2005. next i resumed shooting weekly from oct 28 2009 which i’m continuing today. this collection ends at jul 24 2011. the soundtrack was recorded feb 11 2004 documenting the V train ride from northern blvd queens to broadway-lafayette manhattan starting at 4:30 pm. these photographs are originally from a still sequence that when combined with the sound explore time and space, an interest of my from some of my first photos and a natural consequence of using film.

Remember the excitement of seeing(hearing) fred frith(1) guitars in 1980 or so with bill laswell(2) bass, charles k knoyes(3) percussion george cartwright(4) saxes. was told i could photo the setting up and not the performance which sat fine with me, after hearing cream & canned heat in 1968, eighth grade and bringing along a camera i decided right there photographing performances was a distraction from listening and i’ve only rarely photo’d during concert. studio shooting has become my preferred method.
